Are softboard Surfboards worth it?

I am a beginning surfer and considering getting a long softboard (foamie). Someone told me that I would outgrow it and need to get a new surfboard. How long can I expect to use the foamie though? Is it worthwhile to buy one to start one? I have an old beat up 8' board that I can take out, but learning to balance on it, even to just sit, seems difficult.

I would say there are for learning- i grasped it pretty quickly and moved on, i would just hire one each time, its probs cheaper. Then you can move on to a fibreglass which you most def should get

Those things are not very maneuverable and very heavy. They are really just good for learning so you don't whack yourself or anybody around you with a 40lb piece of fiberglass.

I'd recommend renting one or getting a very cheap used foam board if you're really considering it.

You'll move on to a fiberglass board in no time.

The Fomie's  are really good for learning! If you hit yourself on it, it wont hurt as bad. They are very heavy though. I dont think I would waste my $$ on one.  If you are having a hard time learning to balance on your 8' I would try going to a lake or somewhere where there is no current to teach yourself to balance it. I actually asked the manager of the local pool if I could take my board in the pool to learn and they let me!! This might be something you could do!  Good luck!

yes it is worth it, when you first learn you ding a board and fall, and they are cheap they actually sell them at costco if you live near surf.......and yes you will out grow it obviously like we all do, but right now you dont know what you want in a board, you just want to learn to surf, after surfing a while you will see what kind of board you'll want , how tall are you? and 8'0 is an ok size to start surfing, anything 8'6 and bigger is a great size to start. ask a friend who surfs where "the spot" you should be on your board usually your eyes should be where the label is but it varies...good luck
