Are space bags any good or are they another piece of infomercial trash - if so - what is a better method ?

My wife passed away recently and have been looking for a way to protect her collection of clothing so that it doesn't get moldy or eaten by moths until I figure out what to do with them.

The golden rule is that if anything needs to be advertised, its usually garbage because nobody will buy it.....

These would have to be stored 5-10 years before I can let go and give them away.

I was looking into the garment bags from space bag....but unless there is a better method of storing clothing.....

What bags and/or brands are recommended to store garments in such a way ?

  1. I used some that I bought in a department store a few years ago and yes, they were a good purchase for me.  I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the brand, but I think they cost around $15 each, (maybe a little more).  They reduced the volume by at least a third and kept the items, (mostly clothing), airtight and dry for the year I was storing them.

Whatever you do, do not put mothballs into the bags.  They will leave everything smelling of them and it is almost impossible to get that smell to go away completely.  If you are concerned about moths/eggs, put cedar chips into the bags instead.

Hope this helps and I'm sorry for your loss.

  2. My space bags are just okay- some of them let air in a few days after sealing- the others stayed intact.  They do reduce the amount of space you need for storage, but for a price.  Condolences to you- perhaps donating to Salvation Army is a wonderful way to keep your wife's memory and spirit going.  The S.A. does wonderful things for very needy Americans.

  3. sorry for your loss. i have used space bags they are ok, you can put clothes in a plastic tub, be sure to put some cedar chips in for the moths.

  4. just another piece of infomercial trash i got some and the bag did not go down to paper thin rather yet it was just a big lump with all the air take out of it. its good for important papers but thats about it

  5. I like the space bags.  Be sure you get the newer ones with the double seal.  The ones with the single seal pop open sometimes.  The double seal ones haven't so far and I've had things in them for over a year.

My sympathy on the loss of your wife.

  6. Well, first, I am very sorry to hear about your loss.

Secondly, Space Bags are wonderful.  I use them and I have plenty.  They truly do minimize space and they will keep everything in as good of a condition as the day you put them in there.

God Bless you, and your family.

  7. space bags are wonderful - they only leak air if you don't seal them correctly, put too much in the bag, or there is a hole somewhere.  but even when the air leaked (which actually means the air leaking INTO the bag, not out of the bag) your clothes are still protected - it's just not as compact because now the bag is not vacuumed anymore.  spacebags come in different sizes and shapes...regular bag-shaped, cube style and even the hangup ones for items that you don't want to fold.  i use them to store all my off season clothes and they can really save space.  i bought mine from costco or you can find them at bed bath & beyond. i am sure other places sell them too but i have only shopped for them at the 2 i mentioned.  btw, some dollor stores sell the no name space bags too - i haven't tried it but the material was thinner than the originals.  you can also use plastic tubs but they take up more space, are more expensive and insects can still get in. hope this helps!
