  2. Yes.  They cause swelling in the throat and can make you lose your voice and if enough is swallowed, can close your windpipe.

    Though it isn't realy an action of "poison" per se, it's little tiny spiky crystals that cause the problem -- like acacia or uncooked tubers of Smilax ssp.  So it's more of a physical attack and not so much a chemical one, but the effect is still the same.
