  1. They are legal to own.  Legal to shoot in areas with limited population- ie, farmlands, woodlands, etc.  However it usually is illegal to fire them within most city limits, even if you are aiming at a fence in your own back yard.

I'm sure you know this, but just in case - aiming a spud gun (potato canon) at a person or an animal makes it an unregistered weapon and thus illegal.  Loading the same with flamable, exploding, or chemical (bleach, etc.) rounds makes your spud gun a destructive device and also illegal.

An off-the-subject note.  In case anyone recommends this to you as one of my friends did to me - loading the detonation chamber of a spud gun with a gasoline-soaked sponge does give it extra power and range.  However, there is a good chance of the gun (made of pvc) exploding, especially at the joints.  But it is an effective way to remove those pesky arm hair and eyebrows... :)

    Hope this helps.

  2. Believe it or not, when I was a kids we had them but the name meant something different. Spud guns we had were heavy, metal, 1911 look-a-likes. The barrel was a little longer than the slide. You would push the muzzle into a raw potato, c**k the gun, and then fire the potato "pellet". If you got hungry you could also eat your ammo.

They weren't too powerful but that was back in the early 60's and no one seemed bothered by it.

  3. E-mail your local Police service.  Be sure to give them details of your unit (i.e. aeresol, compressed air, nitrogen, hair spray propelled, etc.)

  4. Lol. they are legal every where. Except California I think. But who cares about California, most of them are strange. Hey, if I can use one as a physics project they cant be illegal.

  5. BATF and NFA have a full page of FAQ's about spud guns.  Just visit the batf web pages.

  6. im guessing yes but not in city limits. i live in maine and that is how it is here, therefore i own like 5 of em :)

  7. i think so yea. i have an uncle that lives by there and he owns several.
