  1. Caring for small children 24/7 is the hardest job in the world, bar none.

  2. It would be hard to get more 'real' than caring for small children.

    Cheers :-)

  3. I think stay at home mothers (particularly during the first few years of a child's life) are the single greatest contribution to the advancement of society.

Professors (non-clinical, who are not engaged in active research in the Natural Sciences or Maths) are largely irrelevant, unless they are involved in teaching reasonable (non-hateful) things, but in large measure, professors aren't a significant contribution to the advancement of civilization if they don't fit the above profile.

  4. By society: No

    By SAHM's: Yes

I vote yes because they are involved with the children and their activities, have stres of juggling home life with child's life with love life and being a wife all together.

  5. I think professors in live in the world of academia but certainly not in the real world.

Reality is staying home and raising kids to be decent/law abiding  and that is the hardest job in the entire world.

  6. Uh, yeah they are.

  7. I am a stay at home mom now.  I have also been in the "corporate" world.  Hands down I am more in the Real World being a stay at home mom.  It is more Cut throat in the "mom" world then the corporate one.  Some of us are more on our toe's and involved in society than those in the "corporate" world.  My main point to you asking this question is:  Try walking both paths.  Then you would not ask such a question.

  8. It depends on what she does.  If she sits at home all day, no.  If she gets out and interacts with others, yes.  A working person can simply go into their cubical, never talk to anyone during the day and then go home...they are not living in the "real world".

  9. Real is what you make of it and perceive it to be.

  10. Yes-

You have to live it to know it.  Most professors today apply their knowledge both in the classroom and out.  Most of them at my university do consulting.   I came late to my job and love it.  However, I don't know how anyone could say only those in the natural science and math area are valid. That person does not live in the real world.  Considering a well rounded individual needs education in all aspects of life- we have a wonderful education system- that's why we call it higher ed.

  11. "No such thing as the real world"

    Perception is paramount.

  12. amen to thing550.

I have utmost respect for any woman who choose motherhood over her career. You give so much back to society if you dedicate your time to raising kids properly.

  13. Stay at home moms, the corporate world and professors all see their worlds as being real; just like everyday normal people.

  14. Each would consider themselves to be in the "real world".  But, having experienced all 3, I'd have to say stay at home mothers could have the most variety day to day if they get out of the house.
