Are students also expected to give tips at bars and restaurants?

I don't want them to kiss my ***, just to bring me the food. If everybody thinks the tip is due, the waiters will keep expecting it. Where I come from, the service is included in the bill and it's nonetheless impeccable.

Reasons why you tip.

1) It ensures proper service.  You'd be amaized at how servers remember the bad tippers.  Plus if everyone got paid a flat rate and no tips, then we wouldn't bust our *** pleasing you and you would probably have less then desirable service.

2)  The server pays for you to be there in more ways then one.  I have to tip out the Bar 1.5-2% of my total sales.  I also tip out my busser 1.5 to 2% of my sales and I tip out my food runners as well.

If you dont leave a tip i still have to pay everyone based on my sales.  We go out of our way to remember people who don't tip since I jsut payed for them to be at my table.

I could have had another person sit at my table and made my money b/c they did tip the 15-20 percent for good service.

So by you not tipping I not only didnt recieve a tip i lost the ability to make a tip from another table and still payed  out of my pocket for you to be there.

3)  We have a rule in the food service industry.  If you cant afford to go out and eat, then don't.  If you can only afford a homemade pasta or McDonalds then thats what you can afford.  Lord knows I've been that poor in college.   Ramen noodles got me through many a hungry nights.

yes, if you spend your money on their (the businesses) services, then you are expected to tip.  15%-20% for normal/good service...higher percentage for great service....

my wife has been a bartender for years....and without tips, she'd be bringing home approx. 15 bucks at week after taxes....so, yeah, those of us who live on tips appreciate them very much, and trust me, we'll remember you the next time you're there.

i think so, i went to quebec city when i was like 13 or 14 with my grade school, and they asked us to tip!!!!! it was just me and my other friend we were both 13/14 and we didnt have any money left i was so upset.....we just left them 99 pennies thats all we had :P i think its stupid, i dont have a job i dont hav money to be leaving tips EVERYWHERE i go but then again servers work hard so i guess it depends....if the service is good, leave a tip ;) if not, then dont?

The same applies to everyone - usually 0 to 15 % of the bill before taxes dependant on service.

The waiters and waitresses do no know who is who and the do not get more pay for serving students.  Put yourself in their shoes.  If the waiter or waitress gives good service give the a good, poor service give a little or no tip (write on the bill why you did so), if the give exceptional service give them a great tip

The server and cook work just as hard preparing and delivering your food/beverages as they do for the business owner at the next table.

When planning your entertainment budget, you must calculate in the tips.

where i come from tipping is not that spread either! i don't get why i should tip someone who is doing their work and gets paid for it! but i guess a real small sum wouldn't hurt! though u are not obliged ti give it no matter what others expect u to do.

Students are human beings too, ne c'est pas ?

And restaurant owners are not businesses nor are they subsidized by the college / university, ne c'est pas ?

So why should any private person not expect to earn from his business / work ? The waiter / waitress usually work for tips and you may be depriving him / her from an income.

To be up front I hate tipping.  People do not use TIP properly.  It used to be To Insure promptness.

I say tip those who are going the extra mile, the ones who give good service.

I don't tip poor manners, poor attitude, laziness etc.

i am a student and i tip everyone even if they didnt do that great of a job!!  it used to not really concern me until i had a job that involved getting tips and working with the public. if you have enough money to go out and get something to eat you got to tip!!!  and lets just say it really ruins your day when you dont get tipped and plus people that get tips usually dont get paid that much because they are supposed to rely on their tips sooo yeah please always tip its good karma and it makes everyone so much more happy!! i could go on a lot more about why to tip but please just do it even if you dont have a lot of money!!

if the STUDENTS are eating and drinking at the bars and restaurants and getting service then they SHOULD TIP... remember if the bill is 20 then you double the first number and the tip should be 4 dollars or more... DONT BE STINGY or next time you might accidently get something extra in your drink or food... lol lol as in a spit wad..lol lol

Where I work, a student is considered to be between the ages of 6 and 12.

You SHOULD tip based on service with a minimum of 15%. Remember, if the service is poor, speak to the manager or  owner.

I'm a student who's gone to restaurants and bars with my backpack and in areas around the schools where I've studied so they know I'm a student.

Most wait staff who identify a student will take one of two approaches:

1. They automatically assume a poor/no tip and treat you poorly. This type of wait staff is asking for the tip accordingly. (I have actually yet to be treated quite this way in an obvious manner, but if I was to be, like many of my classmates have indicated has happened to them, I'd likely leave a rather insulting tip.)

2. They will recognize the clientele is mainly or potentially students. Staff will be friendly (if not students themselves) and should be tipped accordingly regardless whether or not they hide their allegiance with #1 above.

My point: assume the worst. Be polite and they will return the favour. If they don't return the favour, don't tip and don't go back. I'm not saying not to go back because you didn't tip, but because the place itself isn't worth it if that's who they hire and fail to recognize students' worth.

Monday's were All You Can Eat Wings Night at the bar down the street from where my son lived his last year in University.  The first Monday he was back at school, he and all his buddies went in, sat down and ordered wings and beer - lots of wings and beer.  They tipped BIG!!  So what do you think happened that next Monday night he showed up with his buddies?  

That is one reason why you might tip!!  You will get good service, good seats and the waitresses will obviously be happy to have you back.
