Are symbolism and abstract thought positive steps from a philosophical standpoint?

For instance, I don't need religion or spirituality for that matter in order to be amazed by the beauty of the rising sun, it's glory, it's brightness, it's warmth, nor do I need religion to give it symbolism representing my strive for strength, passion, drive, and determination.

Now granted I know the sun doesn't give me these things as gifts, but I do respect my ability to give rise to abstract thought and symbolism. Maybe it seems a little silly, but think of it this way, viewing the physical world as abstract concepts of thought help stimulate that ever present "mystery" feeling we all wish to enjoy. It also encourages free thought and a deeper understanding of oneself.

Is this such a bad thing? What say you?

  1. In my opinion, yes.  Abstract thought is what has allowed science and art as we know it today to flourish.  Symbolism, especially in art, is an important tool for allowing the viewers to understand the artist through their own eyes and experiences.  A red splotch of paint means different things to different people, which makes it more meaningful and personal.

In my experience, religion actually quenches outside thought and attempts to control how we perceive the world by saying things like:  God created the sun; that's why it's so beautiful.  The sun is also deadly - people who get lost in a desert with no water learn that very quickly.  To disallow other abstract thoughts, such as the sun is a part of nature and was not created, prevents us from not only objectively studying the sun but also from interpreting its meaning in both good and bad terms.

  2. Abstract thought has been a key point in philosophical discourse since the ancient Greeks.

  3. Yeah, it's okay to look at things that way. Every time I see a sun set, I'm not always awed by God. But let me say this, to never look at anything in nature and not think of a creator will keep one from filling that empty pit in their lives. The one that no matter how much you have can never be filled.
