Are tarps a good idea to keep wooden floors from getting messed up at a party?

Like laying tarps on the floor...

No.  They slip.  One of your guests will fall down.  Not good at all.

They would protect the floors, but tarps are very slippery.  You don't want your guests to be walking on them because of this.

Tarps are a good idea, but look tacky. Although, canvas tarps would look better than plastic ones. I would try to find a place that may rent area rugs to you.

Sounds like a trip hazard to me....those plastic tarps tend to bunch up if people don't pick up thier feet.  I'd look into renting area rugs for the night.  You get some pretty inexspensively at Wal-Mart also...just for the high traffic areas.
