Question:

Are tazers animal tested?

Ive had my dog sparky a really cute Chihuahua for 8 years now. He's crate trained and im trying to move him to the wee wee pads since i recently moved into a cramped basement studio. The screaming NO!! has not been working. Ive tried using the bitter apple spray to keep him away from ripping the wee wee pads but found mase to be alot more effective. Since the mase seems to have no effect on him anymore, and yelling no does absolutely nothing, someone recommended to me that i use a fog horn directly to the ear. It seems to just make his behavior worse. I also think that since he is aging he cant hear the fog horn anymore. Any suggestions?

  1. I understand where you are coming from. Ive tried mase on my beagle, and it doesnt do the trick. Although a fog horn is a good idea, I have discovered a more effective way which unfortunately is only useful in the summer. My beagle is an indoor dog, so the outdoors is a punishment for him. I found the hot fire escape to be a good "time out" place. Although you are in a basement apartment, perhaps you could ask a neighbor? It would be a great icebreaker since you are new to the neighborhood! The only thing I came up with for winter punishment was a recommendation from my friend which is to rub salt in the paws. Apparently it creates a burning sensation. Good luck and keep me posted!

  2. Sparky;

you have got to be kidding!  First you try housebreaking a Chihuahua with Mace, and now you want to move up to electric shock.  You need to do a whole c**p load of homework about animal training.  In the meantime hopefully someone will intervene soon and take the animal way from you as you clearly don't know what you're doing.  Have you ever been pepper sprayed?  Have you ever been tazed?  Even for a full-sized human that weighs 200 pounds a taser is a painful device and getting pepper sprayed is not exactly enjoyable.  I can't imagine what a Chihuahua feels if it's getting tazed.

  3. oh my god, you cruel heartless idiot. dogs hearing is so much mroe sensitive than ours. if you have been using nasty things every time he goes near the pads to stop him ripping them, he will also associate the bad things with the pads full stop, and he will not wee on them. why not just take the poor dog out when he needs to go, walk it, thats what dogs need, or rehome it to someone with a garden so he has a decent life with out cruelty like mase or fog horns or a mental person shouting at it every time it needs to wee. my dog has a tendency to scrape the lawn before going to the loo, and again afterwards, it could be he is trying to understand how to make it more favourable for him to pee on! do not use mase or a fog horn on your dog-you obviously dont love this animal if you are willing to use such barbaric devices on it-rehome him!

  4. i wouldn't use a tazer unless you want to kill him.  his heart is so much smaller than ours. . . his whole nervous system is smaller than ours by much.  the tazers are only tested on humans.

i would suggest taking him to classes.  your dog really needs to learn basic commands.  also chihuahuas usually live to be about 8 to 22.  they usually calm down as they get older; and if sparky is still alive and kicking as much as you say he is, i do not think he has hearing problems.

he might be behaving the way he is because of the environment change, and many pets just get used to the punishment.  for example, i have a cat who likes to scartch the walls.  i used to spray him with the water bottle, but he's learned to like it.  then i put reverse tape on the walls for a while and he learned to only scratch the wall when i wasn't around.  i found that training him was the only solution.

you can google at home training for you mr. sparky and train him yourself.  but the key is training.

  5. Hmmmm this can be a touchy subject...  anytime one of my pups got out of line I usually would just lay a hot curling iron across its back.  Either that, or just hurl a few billiards balls at it.  Unfortunately, if you miss and hit a wall, they can be noisy and damaging, so be on the lookout! The loud banging and incessant whimpering of those little Yorkies at 3 am actually led to the ASPCA eventually taking my puppies away, and they were only 4 weeks old!  But on the bright side,  I get faster internet access in prison than I did at my apartment!

Good luck with the chihuahua, and BeagleLover, I like your style!

  6. A tazer will kill the dog don't do it

if he is already crate trained you shouldn't try to pad train him

you should just make room for the crate

your probably confusing him worse than ever and he doesn't know what to do

  7. I can't believed you used a fog horn in the first place, that's the thing that's probably deafened him.

Try humane methods to stop the unwanted behaviour. Try putting stones in a bottle/can and shaking it whenever he does something you don't want, it's a strange noise, so he'll look at you, you've stopped the unwanted behaviour and you can move him to where you want him to be. Or try squirting him with a little bit of water or distracting him with a squeaky toy, anything more HUMANE than a foghorn.

You're going to have to start the house training all over again, so whenever you see him going toward his crate and making all the signs he made as a puppy before he went to the toilet, move him to the mats and praise him. Treat him like he's a puppy again when it comes to house training.

Don't ever listen to anyone that says use a foghorn EVER again.
