  1. a tear fault is a pressure fault away from the edges of the plate. The New Madrid fault in southern Missouri/Illinois is one of the more famous examples. it's like a buckle in the middle of a sheet of steel with too much pressure on it from too many different directions. sliding faults occur on the edges where the two plates meet.
