Are telephone wire taps and listening divices legal?

If they are used by law enforcement?I saw a tv show about these.

  1. yeah since the patriot act government and law enforcement is allowed to do that stuff to whomever they want whenever they want. the person above is wrong. they do NOT need a warrant now.  check out the link below. it explains the patriot act without using too much legal language so normal people like us can understand it.

  3. the purpose of police usage is to gather evidence that can be used to arrest and convict felons. for the evidence to be admissable in court, it had to be obtained  with a wire tap or listening warrant. (ie with the permission of a judge).  

    a "wire" which is camera or mic carried by a cooperating person does not need a warrant.  a "bug" which is an unattended hidden device, does require a warrant as a person has an expectation of privacy in their own home.

    legal phone taps are usually done by the telephone company at the central office. attaching devices to the line is generally not legal even with a warrant.

  4. Most definatly. The government listens in on billions of phone calls all the time.
