Is there even an event in the Olympics called 'the long jump'?

  1. No, they're different events. In the long jump, the competitior runs straight along the runway and then launches into the sand pit. In the triple jump, there are 4 phases... the approach phase, the hop phase, the step phase and the jump phase. During the approach, the jumper runs down the runway, they then hop powerfully on one foot, step or leap onto the other foot, and then jump into the pit by taking off from one foot. It literally looks like a run, and then a hop, skip, and a jump.

    long jump is just one huge jump into the sand pit

    In the long jump you jump in to sand, but in the triple jump, I believe you do not.
