Question:

Are the AFL clubs getting rid of the old coaches?

On the face of it, it appears that Essendon and Carlton offloaded their coaches(Sheedy and Pagan) because they are senior citizens.

I guess that due to the age discrimination Act, clubs have to find another reason for installing young blood coaches.

Has anyone else thought of this reason to axe a coach ?

  1. I have to agree with you there..

its seems that they are in fact discriminating against age and they get away with it.  What would happen if your boss came up and said - "look we need some young blood in this office, so we are replacing you with someone younger" - SO WRONG!

Sheedy deserved to stay at Essendon - he has made the Bombers successful - I'm still outraged that they would dump him.

I guess Pagan had to go - although successful at North Melb., he just couldnt do it with the Blues (I think that says more about the crappy players and board members, than it does about the coach).

  2. And not before time!

Kevin Sheedy passed his use by date about five years ago. Now he just acts like a buffoon. Every time he sees a TV camera he just about knocks everyone down, in his path, to get to it & want an interview. Then he carries on like a clown!

He, & a few Vics (AFL brain dead types) wring their hands & say, "Poor Kevvy.".....The Essendon boards knew what they were doing. A club does not win premierships on emotion. He was a hinderance who had lost the respect of the senior players.

As for Pagan....He lost the plot ages ago.

  3. i dont think its age...more that they are not performing well anymore!

if the clubs not winning someone has to go

  4. Welll they do it with players.  So why not?

I think the two of them are fine coaches but Pagan's record is not good in the past few years.  Like Roos he seems to have invented one style of play that has now been worked out by other teams.  He appears to be washed up for new ideas.

Sheedy hasn't had that much to work with but you can't doubt his record (as I think you can for Pagan).  Sheeds can have a job as another assistant for Bomber if he wants :-) (Dang there I go again :-))

  5. I think it was time for Sheedy, who was a bit of yesterday's man.

But I think Pagan was in an impossible situation for the reasons Rogue states - I think he was right for Carlton in the phase they're going through and we might look back on his era as prepping the Blues for some great times.
