Are the Beijing Olympics going to be a disaster?

Not at all. There will be problems, there are at all major events, but I think overall the excitement and friendliness of the people will make a greater impression than anything else. I think this Olympics might even serve to revive some of the excitement over the Olympic Games in general- the declining viewership wasnt helped by the lackluster enthusiasm Greece showed last time.

(Oh, and whoever posted the link to the "We Are Ready" youtube, I was ROFL for about 10 minutes. I think I saw that video about 1000 times on the video screen outside my apt elevators this winter! I love that someone youtube posted it!)

well it sure won't be  the norm  as  we know it...A lot of media censoring, security restrictions, and "big brother" watching every move..  I do not think  they will be a disaster  but certainly  not  the norm .

Let us all wait and see what will happen on August 8, 2008.  The whole world will be watching China.....for bad or worse.

I don't think there going to be a disaster but I think they have made Beijing one of the most boring cities to have hosted the games with all the extra rules and places closing down for them.

China devotes itself to sponsor the Olympics,so it's just unfair to say it will be a "disaster".Anyway,wait and see yourself.

I believe there is a high probability for terrorist attacks that no one prevents. I also think that China has such a high pollution level in the air and water, that many people going to the Olympics may come home with negative reactions. So, basically, yes, the Beijing Olympics will not be the best this world has seen.

It will be as big of a disaster as all of the other Olympic games have been.

Every country have their political "unpopular" standards, their cultural quirks, and problems.  Why should China be worse than all of the other countries?
