Not really, they are just a bit behind when it comes to wallowing in being superficial. Twenty to thirty years ago, I could see the US (and the UK) doing something similar is casting the cuter kid over the more talented one. In fact, it still happens today. You only have to look at Hollywood to see how it is saturated with cute little moppets who have the acting talent of a plank of wood.
