Question:

Are the Green Bay Packers bad at recycling?

I am told that this is the first year that the Green Bay Packers have recycled the tons and tons of plastic bottles from after each football game. It is about time in my opinion! But, I heard that they are now saying it is "too hard" and will not be doing it for playoff games. Any ideas for what I should do? I live in GB and to question the Packers is not allowed since they are GOD, and the media is afraid to ask them hard questions. Or is it no big deal to dump the plastic from a few games into the landfill?

  1. Plastic should be recycled.  There is no "deal" in putting good, usable resources in a landfill if markets exist that can utilize them.  As a bonus (but not really...) with oil prices going as high as they are, recycled plastic can offer some economic benefits for manufacturers.  Not good for those of us who drive...

Recycling at events, such as football games, is a very hard thing to accomplish.  Because the audience is focused on the "action" they think about little else.  I can understand their sentiment about it being "too hard"....more like frustrating to accomplish.

One approach that can be taken is that the stadium can utilize community groups and or fraternities/sororities to accomplish the cleanup/pickup.  They can use the cleanup of the stadium for community service credit.  In addition, the Packers can turn it into a contest between groups to encourage them to collect more. Like football rivalries, these groups have inter-Greek challenges.

Another approach is through a partnership with the local Keep America Beautiful affiliate.  They tend to be able to mobilize volunteers who could help with these kind of event activities.

The packers should also contact the NFL.  I heard a speech by Jack Groh, the NFL's Environmental Coordinator, and recycling is becoming an activity that the stadiums are pursuing.  He may be able to work with the Packers or the Stadium Management to increase the diversion.

    Hope this helps!

  2. No, but they did hand Detroit their hats.

  3. A few games????  Well you're making a pretty big assumption that they're going to win their first playoff game, aren't you?!?!

I don't know, but maybe it's too hard because it's January in Green Bay, and no one who works there wants to freeze their butts off more than they have to!

They should recycle the bottles, though.  You should write a letter to the local newspapers about it, you can remain anonymous that way.
