  1. It depends on the person reading them.  I read the Lord of the Rings when I was about 10 or 11 (I don't remember).  I pretty much became obsessed with them, but I probably didn't understand a lot of it.  I think if I reread it now, I would get a lot more out of it.  So my suggestion is try to read it now, if it's too hard, then put it away and try again in a couple of years.  But don't give up on it; it is an excellent book.

  2. I love them but instead of reading them you could always watch the D.V.D.

They are easy to understand but there's some hard words that are names of people and places.

  3. I can't understand them. Try it out and see.

  4. Well, I would say, first watch the movie. But, in The Fellowship of The Ring, there is nothing at all similar to the movie approximately halfway.

I am reading them now, I would just say skip over the song parts, which are probably the hardest parts. That's what I do, and I don't miss anything. Plus, one song is nearly two pages long.

Also, you should read the Hobbit first, it will definitely clear some stuff up for you that you will read about in the Lord of The Ring books.

  5. they are kinda difficult to read, but then english is not my first language...

  6. Don't worry. I read them at 12 and loved them. Sure, you might not get all the songs and lore and who's who and blah, but you'll get a pretty good grasp. I know I was enchanted from the first page onwards.

    Try it. Tolkien's great!

  7. it'll be okay, maybe slightly hard. There might be a some words that you're not familiar with, but i read it when i was 14, and it wasn't too difficult. The books are awesome though! It's kind of written in an old english way, but not really hard to understand.

  8. they're a little hard, but worth it! i read them when i was 11, and i had to ask people to explain stuff once in a while. but worth it anyway.

  9. I'm 17, in AP Literature classes and I can't understand them for the life of me. If you can, more power to you. The Hobbit is what I recommend, this is before Tolkein went off the deep end with the Trilogy, it's much easier to read (not by any means EASY, but EASIER to read), and I personally enjoyed that one.

  10. They're not exactly that easy to read, but they are good.  You can always try reading The Hobbit or The Fellowship of the Ring and decide whether they're too hard for you to understand and follow.

  11. I think a 13 year old would be fine.  I wouldn't say its easy to understand.  First off, Tolkein constantly references fictional places and characters with very long, unprounceable names.  Then for very long tracts of time the characters are... walking...somewhere.  I mean, I missed a lot when I first read it (i was 12) but I understood a lot, too.

  12. they're not necessarily easy to read, but if you use your imagination to picture the characters, you'll enjoy it more. they are a very fun books, but if you don't feel like reading them now, watch the movies (they are pretty accurate) and i would try to read the books again when you're older. they have a lot of detail and are definitely worth it! =)
