Are the Parisian people really unfriendly?

They're not unfriendly but dealing with people in Paris is like going to any really large city.  For example the people in New York are generally not nearly as friendly as people in the South who are known for their hospitality.  I find the people are friendlier outside of Paris.

No but they can be rude if you're a loud, drunken, outspoken tourist.  I've never encountered a rude person in France. They are very proud and civilized but not unfriendly.  They are formal so they don't smile at every person who walks down the street but that does not make them unfriendly.

i've been to paris, and it's somewhat true. they won't be outright rude to you, but they won't exactly be super friendly. they just think that french people are the best; they speak the best language, have the best culture, etc, etc. keep in mind many americans have this same attitude about america.

I went to Paris and only encountered a couple of rude people. For the most part the Parisians I encountered were friendly and helpful. Rude people are everywhere, I can't think of a place where I haven't encountered someone rude. Paris is a beautiful city, go and enjoy it, don't stress over rude people.

Expecting people to speak English is a non-non in France.  Now if you earnestly try to speak what very little French you may know, they will be more than accomodating.

I find it hard to think of Parisiens as unfriendly particularly watching all the young couples in love with each other all over the place.  Paris pretty much defines romance.  Just avoid the traffic.

I havent actually experienced them, but my son in law is from England and has been to France and says they are very rude. They tend to think they are above everyone else.  Now keep in mind that is only a stereotype.  Im sure there are great people there along with the rude ones.  They probably would react to you the way that you react to them.  Treat them with kindness and respect and Im sure it will be returned back to you.

Ok they're prolly unfriendly for the same reason NYC ppl are. It's the city life. In the 'burbs, u can smile and say hi to everyone u pass and still b ok. If u do that in a big city, they look at you like ur on crack. There are lots of nice ppl in Paris, but not in the suburban kind of way. Also, if u at least try 2 speak w/ them in French, they could be v accomodating.

Like any big city in any country, there are rude ppl, especially during the work day when ppl are stressed out.  It really helps if you can speak some French (though many French ppl have studied some English, many are not comfortable or fluent in English since they are living and working in a French speaking environment).  You might find some ppl responding to your question (asked in French) with answers in English.  Couples taking a walk after supper tend to be less harried and friendlier.  Older ppl who lived through D-Day can be very friendly if they find out that you're American.  One old French lady even reached into her purse and offered me some candy (I was an adult at the time!).

Parisians are perceived to be unfriendly because most of them do not speak English. If you talk to them in English, they'll simply brush you aside.

When we were in Paris inside the train station, we almost got lost, a parisian approached us and offered help with his broken English.

That is like saying Americans are rude and obnoxious.  I'm sure some Parisians are unfriendly but not all of them.

As someone else says, it is like any other big city. I would add that it also depends on the area: in the very touristic or busy places, Parisians tend to be more unfriendly, because they are in a hurry and stressed by city life, but in the more residential areas where there is a kind of communal spirit, they can be very friendly. Try the street markets or the little cafés or shops, and you will meet very friendly people.
