Are the alto clefs and the D Clefs used anymore do u know how to read the alto clef if so can u teach me it.?

  1. The alto clef (a C clef) is still used for viola parts.  Tenor clef (a neighbor C clef) is used by bassoon, trombone, baritone horn, euphonium, and cello on occasion.

    It's often used by conductors and orchestrators as a transposition tool.

    To read the clef - the line that is bracketed by the clef sign is C - this is why we call it a C clef.  In the alto clef - what is B in treble clef becomes C.

    The best way to learn to read it is by learning the lines and spaces just as we learn treble and bass clef (fluent reading).  Many people read it as though it were a transposition.  The lines from the bottom up are FACEG and the spaces are GBDF
