  1. FIRST off...

If you are going to STAY someplace it would probably be a monastery rather than a temple.

    SECOND...

I would suggest that you contact a Chinese travel agency or a travel agency that specializes in trips to China. They are the people most likely to know. Travel agencies will be glad to supply you with free information.

    THIRD...

Since China is a Communist regime, I don't know how many monasteries you are likely to find accessible -- or even OPEN these days.  Communism frowns on religion and Shaolin Temples / Monasteries are BUDDHIST.

EDIT: What number are we at?!  Oh yea...

    SIXTH...

If you are looking for AUTHENTIC Asian martial arts,

your best bet is to stick with Japanese (incl. Okinawa)  martial arts.

In the early 1980's (when I took it) authentic KOREAN Taekwon-Do was easy to find. My master was a Korean national who learned Taekwon-Do in Korea. These days a lot of it is Americanized. Of course Taekwon-Do is not more than about 50 years old.

So -- back to the premise - stick with JAPANESE martial arts where the teacher's schooling is traceable to an authentic lineage.

  2. There are no true Shaolin in China anymore - they all left due to the Communist regime, as touched upon by an earlier answer (Buddhism and all).

Wushu is akin to dancing; that is, it is the Communist version of martial arts - arts with the martial aspect removed.

  3. FOURTH- get the bald headed "grasshoppah" fantasies out of your teen mind.

martial arts doesnt' work like that in real life. you want to see what proper training is going to look like then go to a boxing or muai thai gym. I"m not saying to change your mind and study those styles- but they will give you a good idea of what level you should be training at in order to learn and use the techniques.

not reflective of every style but it is a sure-fire bet that a school training in those systems has a good training methodology and you won't end up accidently stumbling upon a mcdojo.

CMA- and in particular shaolin, is generally going to be suspect because in CMA (chinese martial arts) there are a larger number of bs teachers using downright crappy methodology than any other area of martial arts. And more fraud abusers promoting fake chi powers than any other-

that doesn't mean you can't find a legit cma gym with legit training methodology, but of the small # of cma gyms that do train properly, odds of finding a shaolin one is between slim and none and slim is walking towards the door as we speak-

shaolin is particularly among those cma styles that are the most saturated with crappy training and bs methodology and fraud.

if you really want to learn to fight rather than just play dress-up (LARPing) then I suggest you search for a good teacher with good methodology and worry about the type of style later.

    FIFTH-

training in any other country and spending money to study abroad doesn't work like in the batman fantasies- in reality these people will look down upon you and expect bribes just to talk to the "higher level" teacher, most likely you will be getting training from students who see you as a rube to bilk money off of- you might not be rich, but to people who are living off of pennies a day you might as well be donald trump.
