  1. Many people in India are dependent on autos particularly for short distances as it's cheaper than a taxi but better than going in a crowded bus which stops at many stops.  Removing them all together would definitely lead to increase in unemployment, particularly for poorer struggling class of the society.  That may not be a good option.

Alternatively,  government can apply more stringent traffic rules. Use  traffic lights at more risky zones, employ speed restrictions particularly in cities, employ lanes/dividers ....all of which could definitely improve condition of general traffic.

Besides, many places have too many street vendors/shops making the traffic worse. The thing is that many political parties actually get money from these vendors makes the problem persist for decades. Additionally, frequent  parking on certain important roads slows down the traffic.  No parking zone should be applied on most highways/ main roads/connectors.

We don't need any fancy train or subway system like china which even common people cannot afford. The old traffic system, on the other hand, requires overhauling and needs upgrading like other developing/developed countries.

  2. Rickshaws are excellent.  They are much more cost- and space-efficient than taxis.

  3. Whether auto rickshaws are a compliment or a nuisance depends on the angle you are looking.... If you are a commuter then they are more cost effective but for the general people who donot use them, its a nuisance since they make lots of noise(unless you are talking about those with electric motors) and most auto rickshaw drivers drive in a very rough manner.

  4. I think those electric assist rickshaws are the best thing going, better than the cats meow in heavy urban traffic.  more nimble, cheaper and less pollution than taxis.
