the brickyard was once nothing but bricks. now it's a paved track. i'm just wondering if the bricks are still there, but just got paved over, or were they ever removed. Nascar and everyone talks about how rough that track surface is. it makes me wonder if the old bricks are still there, just paved over and shredding them tires up like that.

  1. the bricks there there at the finish line :)

  2. The bricks are still there but paved over. They still have 9 rows of bricks still lying on the front stretch.

  3. i'm pretty sure they've been paved

  4. In October 1961, the final remaining brick sections of the track were paved over with asphalt, with the exception of a distinct three-foot-wide line of bricks at the start/finish line. They are still there.

  5. still there.

  6. Only the small strip that the winners kiss after the race.

An article on Jayski said NASCAR admitted that the track surface was not the problem. Now the fact that the track is basically flat and the turns are so long is the reason they wear tires out. The cars spend so much time turning at high speeds on a flat track that I would guess it heats the rubber up in the tires.

  7. No, but they did leave a small row of them just past the start finish line, thus they go and kiss the bricks after a win there.  The diamond cutting, and a number of car and tire issues are the problem there it has nothing to do with any bricks.

edit:  I stand corrected, they are there but paved over.  The bricks themselves are still not the issue as far as tire wear is concerned.

  8. they removed the bricks in the late 30's, however, the start/finish line is created by the actual bricks that were there from the beginning

  9. Yes. The bricks at the start-finish line actually rest over a "shelf" in the asphalt, so the bricks fill in the space.

Basically they removed the bricks, paved over the spot, and replaced the bricks back in there.

  10. the surface is rough because they ground the track.check it out

  11. they are still there, NASCAR decided that they were to much fun to take out. Hope i Helped.
