Are the covers on the drivers important?

what is the purpose of the covers? can i have them off permantly?

The clubs tend to bounce around in the bag, especially if your in a golf cart.  The bouncing of the clubs can cause unwanted dents and dings to occur.  It's best to have them on if you want to preserve your equipment.

They are after all your clubs.....the head covers are there to protect not only the heads but the shafts as well from what I call bag rash.  Graphite shafts don't really like getting dinged about by your iron heads during the normal jostling they get.

They keep your drivers protecting from the normal wear in tear they'll be subject to while in your golf bag.  If you've invested any sort of money into your clubs (usually drivers are your most expensive club) than a club cover is a good investment.  

Personally, I have Nike CPRs and use club covers on all of my clubs.

Covers are to prevent scuffing of the heads with other clubs and of the shaft with the golf bag.  Some people even put covers on their irons and wedges, especially forged ones, as they are easily scuffed.

Yes they are important. they can increase the life of a driver by 30+ percent if kept on. they also reduce bounce marks when your bag falls, and they preserve the integrity of the welds.

Yes they are. People who don't care about their equipment never put them on and they make fun of those who do...BUT I paid for my clubs, so I'll be doing all I can to protect them...short of using iron covers that is.

The head covers do three things:

1st - they protect the top of the heads. If you put a club away without head covers you can bang the club you are putting away into those that are in the bag. This will make dents in the top of your club.

2nd - they also protect the graphite shaft and keep it from rubbing the dividers found in your bag.

3rd - they let you express yourself. Get a set with your favorite team or one of the animals head covers. I have two rival schools (University of Arizona and Arizona State University), one for my driver the other for my 3 wood. Everyone always ask why and I get to tell them I have 2 sons that graduated from each.

covers just protect against scratches. they are not necesarry but will help keep down the wear on the club.
