Are the four elements the same as the four corners?

I can't remember exactly what the four corners is, but I have heard of something about using the four corners of the world? Anyone know?

    There are more than four elements.  It's been a while since I've had my periodic table out, but as I recall there were over a hundred.

    I assume you're speaking figuratively here.  However, I do not know what myth set you're asking about.
