Are the general public allowed to bike through an alley as an alternative to a busier street or sidewalk?

I bike across town and back every day and I feel more comfortable going through an alley on my way than riding on the main street with all the traffic. Is this legal?

  1. Back lanes and alleyways are for use by the public, and so, yes it's legal to use them to travel on your bike. Watch out for vehicles backing out of garages, driveways, etc. though.

    I also would avoid using them at night because they aren't lit up like the streets.
