  1. They're are part gold.

Thank god someone asked a question in the Olympics section that isn't a rant about China cheating.

  2. they're plastic

  3. I don't know but I got a copper medal or something for running a race once and I'm still very proud of it.

An Olympic medal would absolutely rock.

  4. they are gold plated

  5. The gold medals are vermeil with at least 6 grams of 24 ct gold. With ~92 % silver

BHP Billiton supplied 13 kg of gold  and produced about 2000 gold medals. That works out at about 6.5 grams per gold medal. This is only 0.23 of an oz.

They are not 9 ct gold.

  6. plastic

  7. its actually chocolate

  8. it is made of silver with gold plating. national geographic ran a show on it.

  9. They contain approximately $800USD of gold, which I guess equates to about one ounce.  But clearly they weight a bit more than that, so I guess maybe they're 9 carat (i.e. more than gold plated, but certainly not solid gold).

The Australian mining company BHPBilliton has provided all of the metal for the medals.
