  1. Real Gold Medals

The last Olympic gold medals that were made entirely out of gold were awarded in 1912.

    The Medals

The Olympic medals are designed especially for each individual Olympic Games by the host city's organizing committee. Each medal must be at least three millimeters thick and 60 millimeters in diameter. Also, the gold and silver Olympic medals must be made out of 92.5 percent silver, with the gold medal covered in six grams of gold.

  2. A common question

No they aren't. If they were they would be far too expencive to make and they would be too heavy.

Both the gold and silver medals are made of solid silver.

The gold medal is then plated with a thin layer of gold.

  3. It can't be made of pure gold since pure gold is very soft. It's probably an alloy. I'm interested in how many K are they??? 14K?

  4. Yes!! If they weren't then they wouldn't be as valuable.  Why do you think they are so hard to get??

    I hope this helps!!
