The last members of the ecosystem to get there share of the energy are producers. TRUE or FALSE???

  1. True.  Only producers (like plants) make their own energy.  All of the subsequent members of that ecosystem have to eat another creature to gain energy.


  2. False.

    The FIRST or lowest members of any food chain are green organisms such as algae and green plants which turn solar energy into chemical energy.  They are the primary producers.

    All the intermediates eat lower life forms on the food chain and are eaten by higher life forms on the food chain.  

    The last, or highest, member of any food chain is a consumer (if you do not count that their rotting corpses provide nourishment for various insects and other "lower" life forms and eventually turn into compost which in turn will provide nourishment for the plants, it is a cycle after all).
