Are the leaves edible that are packaged with umeboshi plums?

Sometimes they are plum leaves but in Japan they use cherry leaves and they are pickled in the same way, they are like the vine leaves used for Greek or Middle Eastern Dolma or Dolmatis.

While they are edible they are quite sour, and a bit salty.
