Are the metal bands on the back of mouth suppose to hurt your tongue??

the metal band on my lower back tooth is really hurting my tongue..is that suppose to happen? if it does..will i get use to the feeling of having the sharp part touching my tongue of the metal band go away.? it feels like the metal band part is going to cut my tongue..

oh you have to build like a callus or something to resist it. i had those when i got braces.
