there was this one kid in my class who moved here from mexico city and he didnt act like the rest of the mexicans in my class. He could speak fluent english even though he didnt live here and he could also speak some french. He also got very good grades in class. He wasnt like a regular mexican stereotype. So I am wondering if the mexicans that live in mexico are different than the ones that cross the border here.

  1. There are wealthy and poor mexicans both in Mexico and in the US, it just depends on where you go.

  2. Just like you can't say all americans are this or that, you can't say all mexicans are poor & ignorant & not all are educated & wealthy.

There's super rich, educated mexican people you know? And there's mexican people that cross the border looking for a better life.. Don't stereotype.

I'm mexican, i speak fluent english, italian & a little french. And i am very d**n well educated.

  3. Well it depends on where you come from, I came here when I was ten and the school asked my parents to sign a form so I could take the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) the very first year, I speak fluent Spanish, English, some German and some Italian.

Most people who come here come from small towns where there aren't many opportunities, I came here to learn english.

It's just like in the U.S. some have more opportunities than others.

  4. The Mexicans that are doing very well in Mexico are staying. Not all people crossing the border are Mexicans. I currently writing a book about the "Myths and Truths" of southern border immigration. I have interview over 500 men and women from Redwood City, Menlo Park and Palo Alto day and restaurant workers  Only 13% were from Mexico with majority from El Salvador.

Everybody thinks everyone that speaks spanish are Mexicans.

There are countries from Central and South America that are crossing the South Border thru Mexico.

Mexicans have been in America since 1300. Everyone talk about the invasion like states like Texas, California and Arizona. There always been large population of Mexicans in these states since the signing of the Guadalupe and Hildalgo Treaty 1848. There has been very successful Mexican-American thru-out USA. Maybe to your shock that there over 500,000 America retirees in LAKE CHAPALA, JAL.

The richest man in the world lives and does business in Mexico, his last name is Slim he passed Bill Gates 6 months ago net worth.

  5. Good question and observation.............Like in the states - take a boy from very rural Alabama. father works say as a garbage man. The boys enviroment and education might be a little different than say a boy living in Bexerly Hills and his father is a plastic sugeon. Maybe sending his child to a very good private school. After school maybe he is in a club or band. On summer vacation he goes many different places - maybe overseas.

You can see the enviroment determines the experiences and knowledge each child may have in life. Probably very much on different levels.

Now relate that to the children in Mexico. I live in a more rural and poor sectiion of Acapulco. I see and talk to many vacationers from all over Mexico. Some very nice and smart and some not so............Then vast majority of my friends here in Acapulco are not that bright ( for the most part ) When I do come across a intelligent well spoken person that does live here - chances are he moved from the northern half of Mexico where the wealth and education is better.

Please dont classify people and judge them by where they come from. we call that judging a book by it's cover. All people are different and are a victim of thier enviroment.

The Mexicans that come to the states are generally from rural , poverty stricken villages that need to provide for thier children and thier are no oppurtunities in thier village to do so. They recognise that and are trying to provide the best life they can for thier children . Much like your parents are doing.

Why not ask the boy about his life in Mexico and why he came here. i bet his father came to the US for a US company or something. Maybe he works for a large Mexican corp. That has expanded to the US or even the world.

Talking to him and finding out all that puzzles you will be much better than - Judging a book by it's cover.

  6. Well in addition to the answers above, I can tell you that there is rich and middle class people and poor people all over Mexico, and the difference in salary most of the time comes in how well the people is educated, still mexico has a long way to catch in order to stop that massive number of people that cross the border illegally. In Mexico only like 30% of the population is middle class, but the further you go south the more differences between poor and rich.

For example in Merida, the biggest city in the Yucatan Peninsula,  rich and middle class people are famous to read a lot and have a special interest in cultural activities.

  7. Interesting. I'm mexican, I live in the US, and I study a PhD in finance. I'm fluent in spanish, english, and french, I've been to 22 countries, and stuff like that. Most people in the US think I'm european, like greek or something, but when I tell them I'm mexican they get surprised. I'm not a high class person, I'm just a hard working middle class kid from Guadalajara. However, schooling has been very important for me throughout my life.

On the other hand, a lot of the mexicans that live in the US come from poor rural places. Some of them are not that educated, and probably their behavior and aims are different than the ones of schooled mexicans. I think that the social and educational differences among the mexican population in the US are more extreme that the ones in Mexico.

A lot of the mexicans that are doing well just come to the US and shop. Others, like my case, decide to go and do research, which unfortunately is not encouraged in our country. I would actually say that most mexican, regardless of their social status, prefer to live in Mexico than elsewhere. However, different circumstances obligate them to move on and seek fortune in a different place.

Finally, I just wanna make a point clear. I'm not talking against the mexicans that come to the US illegally. I think the worst mistake Mexico is doing is not educating our population. If the majority of mexicans could had an acces to education as your classmate, I bet a lot of people will succeed. Mexicans are very clever, unfortunately, they haven't had opportunities. Sad.

  8. Hello the señor that answered first, from Acapulco said it all.I am a mexican live in mexico, in the north, when young because I could not afford it did not took  any foreign languages. my kids now thanks god speak english, since they are on a bilingual school since kindergarten, and are also (besides their normal career path), into mandarin, japanese.ect,.BUT THOSE MEXICANS IN THE STATES NEED ONLY AN OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH UP..I JUST HOPE MORE PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND IT.........SALUDOS Y VALLA CON DIOS AMIGO...

  9. As the above posters say, people in Mexico is very varied. We come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Also, we have all kinds of education opportunities, from government-provided free or almost free education (up to university) to extremely expensive schools, only available to the elite. Most middle class parents struggle to give their children the best education they can, often in private schools, where kids learn English from an early age. You would be amazed at the number of people who speaks English in Mexico, and many also speak another language.

But Mexico is a big contry, and poverty is huge.

Mexicans who enter US illegally are people in great need of a job and a decent wage, which they can't find here in Mexico. Most of them, I am sure, do their best to fit in, but due to their lack of education they find difficult to learn English. Many of them barely read and write. And yet, they also try to give their best so their children get the education they could not get.

  10. actually, mexico has a very small middle class (but it is growing).

most mexicans are poor mainly because of the corruption.  and mexico has a very small group of super ultra rich people.  as mentioned above, mexico's carlos slim is the richest man on earth (or was because warren buffet may have passed him now).

in the mexican middle class there is a lot of importance placed on education and that is why middle class mexicans speak 2, 3 or 4 languages. when they choose to come to the united states they can not relate to the mexicans born in the usa.
