By now I'm sure you know there are different currencies. If you want to transfer a decent amount of $$, try using a company like Rationalfx.com, who will do a better rate than most banks. I'm going the other way (NZ$ to US$), and saving about $300 on what the bank would give me

Australia,New Zealand and USA all use the dollar... but they are different dollars worth different values, so you cannot use them in the wrong place.

No the money in New Zealand and Australia is NOT the same, and you generally can't use US$, however some of the tourist traps in the capital cities may accept them. There are so many places to exchange money that you shouldn't really have any issues, plus credit cards are accepted nearly everywhere.

Return question to you: Can you pay with Australian or NZ currency in the U.S.?????  Why Americans always think that they can pay with the dollar in other countries???  This is really ridiculous and shows how little some Americans knows about other countries - and it also shows how little respect some Americans has for other nations as well.

@ducatifred: I DO have more respect for other countries than most Americans has for foreign nations.  When I am abroad, I am always paying with the local currency there - it's RESPECT for other country's currency - when you only wave with US dollars abroad, it's only a sign of disrespect for other nations!!!!  In other words, it means "the US dollar is the best - I **** on your local money...." Right???

When I am in the U.S. again, I will try to pay with the Euro currency at Wal-Mart - I really wonder what they'll tell me!!!!!

When you are in another country, pay with THEIR money and not with the U.S. dollar. I totally agree with "Torsten B".

No they are not. American money can be exchanged easily.

Its a good question. I have used American dollars in many African countries, Russia and in Europe.

Torsten did not know you could do that in some countries. It shows how little respect he has for those countries.

@torsten and kaffee. You mistakenly assume that I only try to use US currency in other countires. I showed honor and respect to those who asked that I use US currentcy. In SOME places in the world they themselves say the US dollar is more valuable to them. Most of the time I did use the local currentcy.Therefore I showed them respect by giving them what they wanted. I by no means was "waving" US dollars. I apoligise that I did not take the time to make that clear and that you did not understand that.

You gave me a lecture about respecting other countries and their currency yet you say when you are in the US next you will try to use the Euro. Is that respectful?

You cannot use US currency in Australia or New Zealand.  Shops and stores will refuse to take it.  If you have only a small amount, how small is small I don't know, most suburban and small town banks will not want it either.  If they do change it they will charge you a lot in fees.  

Your Mastercard , Visa, American Express or Diners Club card is accepted here but there is a fee every time you use it.  You can get Australian currency from a bank using your card, best to get a few hundred every time if you want to save on card fees.  You can change some currency in international airports and I'd suggest you got about US $200 worth at first.  This should last you a few days.

I can't find a similar page for New Zealand notes and coins but they are similar in size and shape, but not pattern, to Australian.

By the way there's no "ee" in New Zealand.
