Some listed pros and cons:

Expensive to install.

They don't require water.

One expert claims that faux lawns result in much higher ground temperatures.

Some cities still forbid them (old ordinances).

  1. No. It's much better to practice xeriscaping with native plants and a soak or drip irrigation system if necessary (maybe not if done right). Plants contribute to the CO2/O2 exchange and the water cycle, and they provide better storm drainage.

In addition to the cons you've listed fake grass isn't very attractive.

  2. I'm a big fan of not having to water every day and mow every week, but I'm not sure a fake lawn is the way to go.  (I solved my problem by having a townhouse with a very small yard.)

I think you've captured the major issues, but most can be solved with intelligent planning of the area considering the run-off and creating an appropriate drainage area to absorb the water.

You would probably be best off by returning the area to a natural landscape using indigenous plants and trees.  These plants are genetically built to thrive in the local conditions and should not require additional water.  Plus, maintenance is relatively simple.
