Are the nunchucks more for show or self defense ?

Question

are the nunchucks more to look fancy and neat and impress people ?

or is it more for self defense or offense ?

i mean, why do people mostly practice it nowaways,

for defending yourself or for show ?

Most states outlawed nunchaku after the famous Bruce Lee movie "Enter the Dragon" made them famous.  They can be lethal in the right hands, but most people simply practice "nunchaku gymnastics," and they would end up being hurt be someone who really knew what they were doing.  A skilled martial artist, note I say "skilled," could easily remove the nunchaku from the person twirling them.  But, there are people who have been properly trained in their use, and these people would be lethal with them.  You still have to remember - most states have listed them as an illegal weapon, so carrying them around can be more trouble than they are worth.  Your hands can't be made illegal, so you might want to train them, instead.

they look good but they can be used for self defence just not well unless you have done a lot of trainign wiht them. if you havnt done enough trainign with them they will bouce back at you and hurt you aswell.

i believe learning how to use as many weapons as you can, and learning how to defend against them are important aspects of training. anyone that has done competent weapon training will tell you it has improved their hand to hand fighting ability.

like an above post, usually people end up taking a workshop in an exotic weapon just for show purposes.

if you want practical training you must invest time in a qualified martial art, with a qualified teacher.

they are illeagle to carry on the street in new york and a lot of orther states. so they are for show

They make great door stops and window proper uppers as well as very, very large chop sticks .... but with a chain on them.  Good for very large chicken and veggie with rice stew!!!

Because of the legality issue nunchaku are only legal for show.

That does not mean someone properly trained couldn't improvise a flexible/jointed like weapon with a belt. The principles would remain the same and a skilled artist would be more than able to adapt.

Same goes for every other weapon except the stick, cane, umbrella and fan.

They can be very effective if used properly. In Hapkido we use them to a degree of deadly force.

Back in the days they were used as weapons to fight with. Now they are mostly used for show because it's not very practical to use in the streets.

I use them for show. I actually took a class on how to use them just so i could go show off to my friends. haha. I don't usually walk around town with my nunchucks so i don't see how i would use them for self defense...i don't know anybody that walks around town with nunchucks actually
