Question:

Are the old Disney and Warner brother cartoons better for our kids?

My boys who are 3 and 7 prefer to play and draw, etc but when they do watch tv I find the the cartoons are just rubbish. Spongebob Squarepants, fairly odd parent etc are funny but they are bursting with adult innuendo which there is no need for.

I am a young mom and not a prude in any way but the cartoons that my generation and the generation before me watched was so innocent and fantastic. This morning my kids were completely engrossed in an really old Donald Duck cartoon, they were roaring laughing. I havent seen something to grab their attention so much in a long time. Does that not show that the kids are still as innocent and dont need all those Nick toons that are loaded with adult content.

  1. I agree completely.  Today's cartoons are cheap--in every sense of the word.

Yes, I feel the old Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons are far superior.  Treat your boys to the best!

Edit: It's interesting to note the Disney and WB cartoons relied on action far more than on dialogue, whereas today's cartoons often show static figures chattering away.

  2. Yessss

  3. Let them see Walt Disney's Jungle Book.

Absolutely fabulous timeless entertainment. Brilliant music too.

  4. if it is filled with adult content then the cartoon would not have been popular. it was created for the entertainment of the children. do not worry. it is natural that u feel like that as u r thier mom. just let them watch it in peace

  5. i love the disney and warner brother cartoons but that said, i think the current ones are fine too. and there was loads of innuendo in the warner brothers cartoons too - does anyone remember the animaniacs.

i loved those weird little guys.

  6. i totally agree with you i watched sponge bob square pants and in it i watched patrick the pink starfish and i was crying with laughter its just not possible that's child humour and my son was stone faced wondering what all the  fuss was about, however my son is 3 and he watched tom and jerry and tom hit the mouse with a frying pan so my son decided to hit his younger brother with a frying pan ,it don't get no better whatever you watch, there all chaotic.  MICKEY MOUSE,S CLUBHOUSE THATS GOOD.

  7. I agree. When my son watches Boomerang he has more fun than when he watches Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel. He loves s****. Doo and Tom and Jerry. I think they are better for him as well.

  8. Absolutely! You only have to listen to the dialogue. We borrowed some of the old BBC childrens programmes from the library and the difference was startling!  The quality of language used in, say, Ivor the Engine, was much richer and more interesting! Children don't notice that they move more stiffly, they can still find them fun.

And if  you feel the need for speed check out Tom and Jerry! All those trips to the charity shops pay off!

  9. Good for you and your kids for preferring to play and draw than watch the moron box in the first place. I have a two year old son and I do think that most of the so called kids tv is just pure rubbish. It does concern me and whilst I won't stop him watching all together, it certainly will be restricted and quite frankly I would rather he watched the old Tom and Jerry, DIsney etc than these things that they are churning out now.

Mind you I am being a bit hypocritical as he loves to watch Futurama and The Simpson's with me already.

  10. I would say the old cartoons are the best, but I'm biased.  I totally agree with you on Spongebob, its quite smutty.  My little boy likes to watch Tom and Jerry and s****. Doo on Boomerang.

  11. Nah, i think they're fine, kids don't take any of that stuff in cause first of all, they are too young to understand, and second, they don't really pay attention anyway cause as kids they don't have any kind of attention span at all. Honestly, when you were a kid, did you understand any kind of adult innuendo? I think im a lot younger than you & the stuff i grew up watching (which was not donald duck) didn't ruin my childhood or scar me for life...i think they're fine watching any cartoon, as long as its not p**n, why worry?

  12. Yes. I think the older cartoons are better. That might just be because i grew up watching them, but i know my younger brothers and sisters do prefer the older versions of Tom and Jerry, and s****. Doo compared to todays versions :)

  13. The old Disney and Warner cartoons were quality because a lot of time and care went into making them. Look at the cheap backgrounds they use in present-day cartoons, compared to the detail in Disney or Loony Tunes classics. You're right, mom, Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny and the like, that's slapstick, not violence, and follows on from Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy fun in the silent movie era. As a previous replier said, let them see quality, and they're unlikely to settle for second best!

  14. i have to say, the old cartoons with bugs bunny and donald duck were so much more appealing but the newer cartoons, as you say have innuendos but i would bring back the old times and watch goodl old looney tunes! But there are other newer cartoons which maybe good, you've just got to look. I don't think these inuendos affect your children very much because they simply don't understand the 2nd meaning.

  15. idk tho, some old cartoons like the roadrunner and cayote, tweety and sylvester, etc. may not be 'loaded' but they are a bit on the violent side...you probably wouldn't want your kids watching those either.

  16. I agree, also consider that in the movie Shrek, most of the jokes were aimed at aduls. Toons are not aimed at kids today.

I think the old toons at least were simple and easy to enjoy. Today its a complicated trap of words that makes our kids minds into mush
