I am following La Esclava Isaura and have followed Chixa (whatever the spelling is).

And when I look on Amazon.com for music from your country they are always white people?

  1. Brazilian soap operas are about Brazilian middle class and Brazilian middle class almost do not have blacks, like it or not. But look how many mixed people and we barely note it.

  2. We say "A escrava Isaura" you are writing in Spanish lol. we speak Portuguese. We have seen good soap operas here with black people and they aren't slaves on roles. Example: A cor do pecado" passing on Globo and other soap opera finished a little time ago with Foguinho "Cobras e Lagartos".

  3. No, in many novellas (brazilian soap operas) african-brazilians play major roles and they aren't alwalys serveants or slaves. And alot of singers, actors, and models in Brazil are of african descent. Go on amazon and type in Funk Carioca or other types of brazilian music and you will see many african braxzilian singers.

  4. A lot has changed over the years.

There was a time when they would play mostly slaves and housekeepers, maids, servants...

Keep in mind Escrava Isaura is a remake... I´m not sure which one you are watching, my guess it´s the new version.

The old is from the late 70s or early 80s.

Some very good black actors have complained about being typecast as maids etc.

It´s much better now, I think.

Soaps are very popular here and Globo (the major network TV) has an amazing level of quality on it´s productions.

Some soaps can cost as high as USD 50,000 a day to make.

Off course they get their moneys worth back in advertising etc.

African brazilians are very popular as far as music go.

Milton Nascimento, Paulinho da viola and many others...

and that includes Gilberto Gil, who not only is a very talented singer/composer, but it´s also the Ministro da Cultura (secretary of culture) for the federal government.
