  1. I think america is mainly divided on the basis of wealth, and the amount of money one makes.

  2. This isn't something that is new here in America. People of color didn't have rights recognized until the 1960's during the movement of Dr. Martin Luther King. They were not allowed to vote, there was segregation in the schools, the busing transportation system, and they were not allowed to stay in hotels or go in restaurants where whites were. There were also separate drinking fountains that were signed whites and blacks. The deep south also had KKK rallies that were, and still are, made up of white supremacists. Even though people of color have their constitutional rights, there is still prejudice and racism experienced by them from whites. At least laws have been passed  that recognize hate crimes against people of other ethnic groups. Those who choose to break those laws will be prosecuted. Racism is caused by fear.

  3. Americans are both actually. We are unified as a country, which was evident after 9-11.

But we are also individuals and we highly prize our right to that individuality. Because we are free, we have the right to be whatever we want to be. And of course, we are highly opinionated about what or who is right and who is not! LOL

Take my family for instance. We are united as a family. But we are also individuals who are different races, religions, political affiliations, etc...

  4. Americans often divide themselves by race, religion, social class, gender, politics, sexual orientation, etc. Somehow, there's always a need for one group to feel superior to others, unfortunately.

  5. America might, in fact, be the most racist country at this time.  Everything is based on race here.  Most work applications ask which race classification you fall in.  The whole issue of Obama running for President is he's a Black man.  If he were white, he would be compared to John F. Kennedy.  But even now, the media is trying everything they can to sabotage his candidacy.  As long as there are racists and people who hate instead of forming a bond with others, we will continue to fight until ultimate destruction.  Sadly, hate and misunderstanding are too prevalent in the nature of man throughout the World!!

  6. The majority of Americans lean conservative and profess to be Christian, although many don't practice Christianity or understand it particularly well.  Most are tolerant of other races, religions or other demographic factors.

Most tend to accept and tolerate homosexuality although the majority are heterosexual and would prefer not to have the g*y lifestyle shoved down their throats.

Americans, more than most other cultures or nationalities, tend to accept the notion we should live and let live.  Few of us are Muslim, but most of us will tolerate Islam and Muslims.

I don't think the Obama-Clinton dispute is much more than a political infight. I could be wrong.

Americans may not be united on these issues, but our basic tolerance will keep the lack of unity from being much of a problem.

  7. No, it is human nature (in my opinion) to avoid things different from oneself. This applies to race, religion, culture, language, the list goes on. I do not think we go out of our way to hate one another, but by no means will we be accepting.

  8. Actually, more than anything, Americans are divided on the basis of urban and rural.

But there are a lot of other divisions, too: north and south, race and ethnicity, political views, religion and religious attitudes, feminists and people who don't consider women to be human; haves and have-nots.

The current president has been unbelievably divisive; leading to it being almost impossible to have rational public discourse.

Yes, you're wrong to think that Americans are united about everything; we have a great diversity of people here.
