Are the pop tops from soup cans, etc. aluminum too (for recycling)?

My group is collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald house. Normally people only collect tops from soda cans, but I was wondering if other kinds of pop tops are aluminum also, like from cat food, soup, canned fruit, etc. Anybody know?

  1. Here's how you test for aluminum:  put a magnet on the can.  If it sticks, it's either steel or a mixture of steel and aluminum.  If it doesn't, it's aluminum.

  2. The pop tops are made from the same material as the can (have to be, or you'd get bimetal corrosion).  Recycle them with the cans.

  3. As far as I know the tops are made of a higher quality ALUMINUM, so there is no cross corrosion of metals. I collect them for a friend.  I collect the ones from soup cans too.  Remember that not all tops are aluminum!
