  1. Precious metals and other commodiites are not pegged to any currency. They are simply traded in dollars. Anybody wishing to purchase those commodities on the open market has to first buy dollars.

No.  In all actuality, our currency is pegged to the precious metals market.  We here in America trade these metals in dollars, but each country, in fact, trades these metals, like gold, silver, platinum, and so on in their native currency.  A pound of Gold could cost you $600 in Bejing and you could turn around and sell it for 60,000 Euros in London.  That is also the reason why moving precious metals from country to country is highly regulated.
