Question:

Are the "parents" here really parents, and if so why do they write like kids do?

So many of the questions I've read here are loaded with spelling and grammatical errors, and so it makes me wonder if it's just kids posing as parents. Or do grown ups really not know how to write a grammatically correct sentence and use spell check?

I'm not trying to be condescending; I'm just curious. I'm a senior in high school, and I would be embarrassed to write half the things the "parents" here do.

  1. I am not a parent, although I have helped raise a toddler at one point (long story), and an Education major, and have done some birth education.  So some questions I can't answer, but some I can, so I am sure some kids feel the same way.

  2. yes i am a parent and i understand what you are saying but this is how i type through email and messages, i know there are grammatical errors but people who read these can understand the message. its not about putting and ( ' ) or capitalizing letters its about getting the point across.

by the way, when you type messages through yahoo groups if you look to the side theres a pop up that says "opps! it looks like you have a mispelling. if a kid was trying to pose as a parent they would probably correct it by using the spell checker.

  3. Im not a parent but have been a nanny (which is essentially a surrogate parent for those who work outside the home) for close to 10 years.  I also have a lot of educational back ground in psychology and child care.  I am not a parent because cancer left me infertile before I even had the chance to try.

I think what you are seeing is that this is a very very informal means of communication.  Its a stress release, its an outlet.  Its not work, its not a term paper.  Not too many people put much effort into proofing, and honestly, I dont see why you would.  Again, this is a stress release.  Proof reading to make sure every t is crossed and punction is perfect...   thats something I do at work, not something at home sittin around burning time and releasing stress.  Why do I want to do work when I am trying to escape work??

  4. Well I am a parent. Some people don't think it is important to write correct english on an online forum. I don't think it's that important either, but I don't want people assuming I can't spell so I normally type as correctly as possible : )

  5. Sometimes, yes it's highly possible that some of the people on here are posing as parents

A more logical explanation is that we're lazy lol

I try to use correct grammar and spelling, but sometimes I just can't be bothered, we're all only human after all

  6. lol cause babies drain you, i was a strait A student i high school and i went to look over a SAT book with someone and it could have been pig Latin i know i knew this stuff 4 yrs ago but that's cool there is always spell check

EDIT:OMG  n2mama i used the wrong spelling for straight at 1:00 in the morning oh no!!! i guess that means i fail now, hu? get over yourself. i guess i need to break this down for you kids dont make you forget they make you not care!! i have more important things to worry about, way more important  than the grammar i use on the Internet.

  7. Wow, hard to believe a straight A high school student doesn't know how to spell the word straight or to capitalize her "I"s in a sentence.  I think it's the prevalence of text messaging, grammar, sentences structure, spelling all go out the window.  There are some questions I cannot even answer because I can't read them.  Yes, some grown ups don't know how to write a grammatically correct sentence, and apparently a lot of people don't use spell check.  Personally, I'm a parent and just for the record, 30 years old.

  8. I'm a parent, and I *usually* use proper grammar, mostly because it's a habit, and it also can increase your chance of getting best answer. I don't think that I would choose a best answer is someone typed all sloppy and spelled everything incorrectly. I was always taught to use proper grammar~ wherever I am. Sometimes, if I'm being lazy or I'm tired, I don't pay as much attention to my spelling, etc.

  9. I completely understand where you're coming from.  It drives me crazy when I ask a question and the responses are full of grammar and spelling mistakes.

Honestly, they're probably adults.  There are a lot of ignorant, non-talented, poor-writing adults in this world.

Thankfully I grew up in an environment that forced me to read, write, spell, and use proper syntax.

If you get an answer from me, I am a real parent, but you probably knew that, as I know how to use Yahoo's built-in spell-checker.

  10. I'm single but still don't see how having a child can suddenly wipe away one's ability to spell and construct a decent sentence.  It may be a child posing as an adult, but from the messages say that I get at work, people can't, or were never taught how to write.

  11. lol lots of people that are on here are young mothers and dont have proper education or they are like me and just dont care...i am a university student and could care less about my grammar on here, im not being graded or trying to impress anyone..

  12. I am not sure.

I am not too concerned about a few spelling mistakes, but if it is horrific writing I just don't read it.

I worry more about their attitudes toward each other. Spelling doesn't make threats like some of these *Parents*
