  2. The reefs (I assume you mean the Great Barrier Reef) are quite a long way from shore and must be reached by boat.

    Some islands are coral cays and are part of the GBR itself e.g. Green Island (off Cairns) and Heron and Lady Eliot (off Bundaberg) and the coral is only metres from the beach. The reef is also fairly close to a number of other islands, but of course a boat is needed to get to the islands in the first place.
