Question:

Are the roads and the driving really that bad in Punta Cana?

I keep reading and hearing the horror stories of the way the drivers drive the vans to your hotel after leaving the airport. They say they drive going about a hundred miles an hour, pay no attention to stop lights, you hit potholes and that it is a rough and crazy ride. How true is it?

  1. Probably like 10 years ago, but things are better now. DR is a lot more developed these days. Hopefully they'll build a light rail system for that area in the not-so-distant future. Punta Cana is growing fast.

  2. This a big lie !!! I live more than 13 years and the drivers who are giving the transfer service are well educated drivers. So this "stories" are bull....t

    Happy to help you!

  3. I am from Puerto Rico, and have lived all OVER the states.  All I can say is it depends on the driver.  We stayed at a resort in the DR, but the driving seemed just like the driving I saw in PR and Florida.  Alittle fast....yes, but it wasn't exactly crazy.  Just remember that the driver is from there, he or she knows what they are doing, and it would probally be safer for them to drive than you since they know the habits of thier fellow drivers than you or I coming from another place would.

  4. You have heard correct.  I was in Punta Cana in Sept of 2007 and the roads are very narrow and people are driving on mopeds.  Every driver we saw would weave in an out of the mopeds and come close to hitting on-coming vehicles.  Whether you have the right away or not, the busses may cut in.

Even with that, I will definitely go back to the DR.  They are becoming more developed and it was very nice there.

    Have fun
