Are the threads of lens hoods all the same?

i want a tulip style hood on my 58mm. but its really hard to find -from canon

however there are many hoods that arent from canon that look like i want them to look.

my question is -can i buy a different company lens---say from sony for example.?

will the hood fit on my lens?

  1. Canon makes individual hood that seldom fits on another lens. (I had one of their lens catalog and it lists the model number of the hood that fits a particular lens). There are a handful of hoods that will fit more than one lens I remember.

    Re: the threads. I just tired - even with the same size, they didn't fit. I suppose it's made that way.
