Question:

Are the tour pros allowed to wear METAL spikes during a tournament?

At the Buick Open today in Torrey Pines, it sounded like the players wore metal spikes (versus soft spikes as most courses now require). Also, overheard someone say it is allowed for the guys on tour. Is this true? Or does Torrey Pines allow metal spikes? Most all courses no longer allow metal spikes.

  1. Nothing sounds more like metal spikes than metal spikes. Sure, the pros are allowed to still use metal spikes. Personally I think several of the soft spikes available now provide as much ground grip as any of the metal spikes and are easier on your feet. You also get fewer spike marks on the green with soft spikes. But I'm no pro.

  2. Metal spikes are permitted on tour and are preferred by some of the players (ie Phil Mickelson).

  3. yes
