I have strabismus (crossed eyes) and I was wondering if certain eye classes can make it less obvious?

I have the type were my eyes cross inward. Mostly my right eye is crossed. There is nothing I can do to actually cure it so I'm looking for ways to hide it better. Its very noticable.

  1. Iv heard of people getting surgery to help correct it, but I'm not sure about your case if that is available for you or not.

  2. Glasses won't do anything to help you unless you need them for other corrections (you are nearsighted/farsighted), as strabismus is a condition in your brain. If you really want glasses to help hide the strabismus, you will get double vision and headaches. I tried them on once and chose not to recommend them to patients. Vision therapy is a great option, but is quite expensive. It helps you control your eyes from turning in, by doing exercises to strengthen the muscles in your eyes. Check out  vision therapy if this is really bugging you, as there aren't many appealing   glasses that will help.

I don't recommend surgery. I also have strabismus, and had surgery at age 2. Soon after, my eye started to turn the other way! Later on in my life, my vision began to decrease in that eye with strabismus, and it then became a lazy eye (amblyopia).

There really aren't that many options for people like us. The only one with a chance at working is vision therapy, but again, it is quite expensive.

  3. Yes, they are spectacles with "prisms" incorporated. The power of the "prisms" is dependent on the degree of strabismus (crossed eyes).

You will need to consult an optometrist/ orthoptist to measure the power of prisms required.

    Some points for consideration:

    1) A full correction may induce double vision! (Suppressed image is moved out of the suppresion area) And that can be VERY annoying. You will see EVERYTHING in double mode. Your optometrist may chose to do a partial correction.

    2) The lenses may look thicker on one side of the spectacle frame... may not be cosmetic appealing

    3) Consider tinting your lenses to make the strabismus less obvious.

    Hope this helps

  4. There is. When I was younger, I had a friend that was cross eyed. She had thick glasses that straightened her eyes. I'm sure they're thinner now. When she would be talking to me without her glasses on, I'd always think she was looking somewhere else! I'd always say, Who are you looking at? and she'd yell, you ya idiot!

Here's what I found:  What role does surgery play in accommodative esotropia?

Surgery is only indicated if the eyeglasses fail to straighten the eyes adequately while the glasses are on. In this case, eye muscle surgery (strabismus surgery) may be recommended to further help improve the alignment of the eyes. In general, surgery for refractive esotropia does not eliminate the need for glasses but rather fixes the amount of crossing that is “left-over” when the glasses are on. The eyes will likely continue to cross when the eyeglasses are off and surgery does not replace the need for eyeglasses
