This has been asked before but never answered in a way that I found useful or authoritative-my idea of Authoritative being an answer by someone in the "locating biz" such as an Officer or Detective from a Police Department or an Agent from some Gov. agency,OR by "skip tracers","bounty hunters",etc.Every place I've found that said FREE SEARCH actually meant this:,the SEARCH is free but seeing the RESULTS of the search costs money.Which is an underhanded advertising technique,a load of B.S and it wastes my time. Also, does anyone know where I,as a member of "the public",can access these "Public Records" that these companies claim to get their info from? All informed help will be appreciated greatly.

  1. Public records are usually available at a county courthouse or other public building. The online databases are not government run (there are no such official sites) and that's how they can charge you. I assume they go through public records and enter the information in their system. It seems they also go through phonebooks and that's how they get records of people's phone numbers and addresses. For example, my name has never been on the bill for a landline so I am not listed on most of those sites.
