  2. Sure there are. The biggest pro is that things get done a lot faster, for example, when there's no opposing party trying to slow you down. Decisions can be made immediately by the government, instead of the democratic system we have now of agonizingly slow committees and filibusters.

    Of course, that's only a pro if you're the one in power.

  3. Stalin and Mao were both real pros when it comes to tyranny.  

  4. It all depends on the leader. If the leader is a benign, magnanimous being, it shouldn't go bad for the people. But once a jerk gets into power, the people are screwed. The good dictator--doesn't that sound weird?--would use all the power for the benefit of the governed, the bad one would use the power for self-interest leaving the rest to rot.

    Edit: c**p, you used the word tyranny--I'll keep the definition at arbitrary use of power. I guess it can maintain order to a good extent.
