Are there FAA weather requirements for a students first solo?

I'm a student pilot, both my CFI and I think I'm ready to do that first solo, 3 times around the pattern, full-stop. But I'm showing 16 knots for Saturday. I seem to remember some requirements, maybe 5 knot maximum, for solo. I don't know if it's the FAA requirements or my school's. Anyone know if the FAA has weather requirements beyond regular VFR reqs?

  1. There are no specific FAA requirements other than VFR minimums.  Many flight schools however do have thier own minimums so you will have to verify those before you go.

Beyond the FAA minimums, you will need to set your own personal mins for your experience and comfort.  There will be some days where it is legal to go, but still not a good idea.

Anyway, congrats on your first solo opportunity.  You have had lots of training and I am sure you will do great!

    Blue skies!

  2. There are no specific FAA requirements beyond basic VFR.  Your instructor will most likely set a limit for maximum wind and maximum crosswind components for solo flight.

Everybody is different, but I wouldn't expect an instructor to allow more than 10-12 knots max for a first solo, with a max crosswind component of 3-5 knots.  Many schools/instructors will set solo limits much lower.

Don't be too anxious to push the day of your first solo.  Your instructor will send you when the conditions are right.  Your instructor will make sure the conditions are both safe and enjoyable for this great milestone.  Congrats in advance!

  3. If there is a cross wind I wouldn't fly that day.

  4. You should take  a look at the FAA's downloadable student pilot guide.

There is no FAA weather requirement for a first solo, other than the regular VFR requirements. However I would strongly recommend not soling with 16 know winds. I am sure your school would not permit this and you assumption that this is a school requirement is correct.

I am sure your instructor and school feel the same way about this.I

Good luck and have fun on your first solo! You will always remember that moment.
