This summer I am supposed to go on a study abroad trip to Italy for the 1st time, (YEAH! I'M SO EXCITED!) but we aren't going to Sicily because the train takes 18hrs. to ride from where we will be. (I think we will be in Perugia then...) But one day I think I want to try to go to Sicily on my own...I was wondering if there are any airports so that I could fly directly into Sicily?

  1. Catania has a brand new airport - Fontanarossa. A cab to Catania's main train station will run you about 15 Euros. Once in Catania there is plenty to see and do. If you are there during the summer then take the trip up to the top of the volcano, Mount Etna - it's the tallest active volcano in the Mediterranean Sea at 3,300 meters (over 2 miles high!).

Catania by night - the area around the Bellini Theater is full of bars, music clubs and pubs and is absolutely crowded at night.... Friday nights are the best. the city by day is fun to visit and there are many great places to eat.

The coast line around Catania is particular because it is not sandy. Instead there are great black volcanic rock boulders where the locals over the years have cut path ways down to the sea... and the water is crystal clear!

  2. nope...just donkeys

  3. Aeroporto Falcone Borsellino in Palermo and Fontanarossa Airport in Catania are both on Sicily. You can check for budget flights from various cities to the airports in sicily on this site: http://www.whichbudget.com/. Windjet flies from Fiumicino airport in Rome to both Sicily airports and blu-express also has flights to Catania.

  4. recently I came across a beautiful artichectural book on Sicily, it's very, very pretty, I made me feel that I like to go there someday. I have been to various part of Italy 3 times and the Cyprus, but Sciliy still attracks me ... If you ever have a chance, here are some places I really like: Viterbo (only 1.5 hr. by train from Rome), Matera, an ancient cave dwelling from the stone ages where the film makers use that setting for Bible story including Jesus Christ Superstar, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and it's counterpart Hercurlaneum ( I went on the cultural day and National day, so the addmission on both places is free) and then of course, Rome,  Venice, Florence that everybody knows ..... Also, make sure you don't miss the Napel's national museum and join the guided tour after the Pompeii and Hercurlaneum trips.

  5. Absolutely!

The largest airport is Catania International airport (which has just finished a 2 year long renovation) and British Airways etc fly direct there as well as a few budget airlines.

Palermo airport is on the West coast and there are also some much smaller airports, which are used mostly for non commercial flights, including the US airbase.

There's a list of ALL airlines who fly to Sicily on http://www.investsicily.com/getting.htm

  6. Palermo http://www.aeroporto.palermo.it/

    Catania http://www.aeroporto.catania.it/

are the main airports in Sicily
