When blu-ray players came out I heard that they would not do all the whistle and bells that were advertised, but 2nd gen would. Is that true, and are there any 2nd gen players out yet?

  1. i believe normal blu ray players does all what ever the new audio/video formats are out like dolby true hd, & 1080p

  2. The Panasonic DMP-BD50 is one that has all the bells and whistles you'd expect...

  3. What you are talking about is the Blu-Ray Profile Spec.  Profile 1.0 played movies and did have all of the high end sound formats.

Profile 1.1 added the picture in picture ability.  This requires the player to have 2 seperate A/V decoders built in.

Profile 2.0 added Blu-ray Live ability which required an Internet connection and a processor fast enough to do the Java that is used on Profile 2.0

Frankly, Profile 2.0 is not very exciting, but Profile 1.1 is very cool, so get a Blu player with at least Profile 1.1.

By the way, the PlayStation 3 is Profile 2.0 enabled.  It is still probably the best Blu-Ray player out there.  You just have to be ok with using a game machine as your Blu-Ray player.
